Water heater building permit

In an effort to address climate change, we encourage you to replace water heaters with electric heat pump water heaters. Learn about Piedmont’s electrification rebates and resources.

For exterior units, your project needs to meet Design Review Exemption #14:

• Ground mounted
• Only unit on property
• Not in setback or visible from the street

If this exemption is not met or there is more than one exterior unit on site that is existing or proposed, the project requires design review approval first. This includes exterior tankless water heaters, exterior storage heat pump water heaters, exterior split condenser water heaters.

Requirements and attachments

When you apply online, you can upload documents with your application. Make sure to upload all of the required documents. If your application is not complete, this will extend the time it takes to issue your permit.

• Title page with project address, contacts, scope, date and blank area for reviewer notes (Example: 11x17 | Example: 24x36)
• Site plan showing location of unit and dimension to nearest property line. This can be generated from Google maps default view.
• A sound calculation based on the ANSI/AHRI Standard 275 for the exterior unit. This should be calculated for the nearest property line. The calculation must result in a sound level rating of 50dB or less at the nearest property line. (Fill out the last page of the worksheet)
• Contractor or Owner-Builder Declarations (required for all projects)
• Projects over $50k require Construction & Demolition Debris Recycling Statement (DRS)
