Get a lock box for your keys

A lock box is a key storage system that only the Fire department has access to. In an emergency, we can use these keys if you aren’t home or are unable to unlock your door. Otherwise, we may need to break down a door or window.

It’s helpful to have a lock box if:

  • You are an older adult
  • You live alone
  • Your property is under construction or vacant

Need to know

  • Costs range from $200 to $650 depending on the product
  • Once it’s locked, only the Piedmont Fire department has access to unlock it

Before you start

The company that provides lock boxes is called Knox. The most common thing people store in them is keys, but you can also include things like security codes, access cards, or floor plans.

Each KnoxBox is keyed to a single master key controlled by the Piedmont Fire department.

Steps

  1. Go to the KnoxBox residential product website.
  2. Select California from the drop down menu.
  3. Type “Piedmont” into the Local fire department field and select our agency.
  4. Follow the instructions to select a Home or Residential box.
  5. After we approve the request, Knox will process your purchase.

When you get your Knox Box, install it near your home entrance. If you are unsure about where to put it, we can come to your home and make a recommendation.
