Pack a go-bag

A go-bag is a lightweight bag you can carry. It includes the items you need if you have to evacuate.

Need to know

  • You may be away from home for several days
  • Make sure everyone in your household knows where it is

Before you start

A go-bag is different from a home disaster supply kit. A home disaster supply kit includes things your household needs to live for two weeks without utilities or going to the grocery store.

Steps

1. Gather your supplies:

  • Map marked with at least 2 evacuation routes
  • Prescriptions or special medications
  • Change of clothing, including a cotton long-sleeved shirt and pants
  • Extra eyeglasses or contact lenses
  • An extra set of car keys, phone charger, credit cards, cash
  • First aid kit, including a cotton face covering or bandana
  • Flashlight
  • Battery-powered radio and extra batteries
  • Toiletries and a roll of toilet paper
  • Copies of important documents (birth certificates, passports, insurance, etc.)
  • Food, water, and medications for pets
  • Protein bars and a bottle of water

Tip: Include your pick-me-ups

Think of things you likely won’t want to be forced to give up in a stressful situation, like caffeine or nicotine.

2. Pack your supplies

Pack everything in a lightweight bag that you can carry, like a backpack. Practice carrying it.

Store food and water in a tub or chest on wheels to make it easier to transport. Keep it light enough to be able to lift it into your car.

3. Store your bag

Put your bag in a place in your home that’s easy to get to, such as a hall closet, spare room, or garage. Make sure everyone in your household knows where it is.

What’s next

Review your supplies every year and replace anything that has expired. Carry them when you practice your evacuation routes.

Pack go-bags for your car and office

Keep go-bags in your car and office. Make sure these do not have sensitive items like keys or documents, unless they are securely stored.
