Construction safety measures and traffic impacts continue at community pool construction site

Published August 9, 2024

As the new school year begins, construction safety measures at the new community pool site will continue to impact traffic along Magnolia Avenue:

  • The construction fence on Magnolia Avenue will remain in place, creating a separate travel lane for trucks inside the fence.
  • One lane remains open to cars for through-travel.
  • The school pick-up and drop-off area remains in place.

As additional safety measures:

  • Project deliveries and trucking at the site will be restricted to hours outside of school drop-off and pick-up periods (8-9am, 2-3:30pm).
  • The City will continue to provide a crossing guard at Magnolia and Bonita Avenues in the mornings and afternoons.

The buffer created by the mid-street fencing will be particularly important over the next few weeks, which will feature several days of heavy truck traffic as concrete is poured for the competition pool floor, walls, and steps. Trucks will enter the construction site at Hillside and Magnolia, complete their work fully within the fenced area, then exit directly onto Bonita Avenue. Flaggers will be on-site on these days to provide additional traffic control.

Magnolia Avenue to be re-paved

Construction activity from the pool project, combined with PUSD construction projects in recent years, has heavily degraded the roadway along Magnolia Avenue. In June, the City Council augmented the budget for the pool to include a full repaving of Magnolia Avenue between Hillside and Bonita.

Currently, paving is scheduled to be completed on Saturday, August 24.

Pool opening planned for Spring 2025

Construction remains on track for completion in early 2025. This will be followed by a “commissioning” period, which includes system testing and other on-site work to prepare the facility for operations. The new pool is expected to open to the public in Spring 2025.

The City remains grateful to the community for their generous and ongoing support for the new pool. We appreciate your patience during construction and will continue to work diligently throughout the project to minimize impacts and necessary disruptions in the Civic Center as much as possible.
