Dispose of your holiday tree promptly, safely

Published December 26, 2023

After holiday celebrations end, please dispose of your holiday tree promptly using Republic Services curbside pickup or by cutting it up and placing it in the appropriate waste cart.

Holiday trees can quickly dry out and become a fire hazard. Once you are done with your tree, you should not leave it in your home or garage or lean it against your home outdoors.

Curbside collection for natural trees December 26-January 6

Republic Services will collect natural, unflocked trees curbside from December 26 to January 6. These trees will be turned into valuable compost and mulch.

Put your tree out on your regular service day:

  • Before placing your tree on the curb, remove all lights, decorations, tinsel, ornaments, and the tree stand.
  • If your tree is more than 6 feet tall, please cut it in half.

Natural trees can also be cut up and placed in your organic waste cart.

Flocked or artificial trees

Flocked, or “snow covered” trees are not compostable or recyclable. To dispose of a flocked or artificial tree, cut it up so that it fits in your black waste cart with the lid closed.

Alternately, Republic Services will collect non-compostable trees curbside by request. Call 800-320-8077 to schedule a pickup:

  • There is a $30.82 disposal fee for curbside collection of non-compostable trees.
  • You can also use your annual Bulky Item Clean-ups for non-compostable trees in lieu of the pick-up fee.

When placing non-compostable trees for curbside pickup, cut them into 4 foot or shorter pieces.
