One-way traffic on Bonita Avenue in the Civic Center begins July 6
Published June 30, 2026
Starting July 6, the block of Bonita Avenue between Vista and Oakland will be converted to one-way traffic heading northbound toward Oakland Avenue. The block will be closed to traffic beginning the morning of July 6, while the roadway is being re-striped. Once the striping is complete – expected by late afternoon – the block will re-open as one-way.
The conversion is the final of several measures the City has taken to improve safety, circulation, and the parking experience for visitors to the Civic Center. In addition to converting the street to one-way traffic, the new configuration will:
- eliminate the Havens Elementary drop-off zone on Bonita
- convert the parking spaces on the Havens Elementary side of the street from parallel to diagonal parking, which will add 17 new parking spaces
- add two new ADA parking spaces
Earlier this year, the City added 30 additional time-limited parking spaces along Magnolia and Bonita Avenues – more than doubling short-term parking in the heart of the Civic Center.
In an earlier phase, the City expanded the Havens Elementary pick-up and drop-off areas on Highland Avenue, adding a second drop-off zone across the street from the school. The goal is to improve safety and traffic flow in the Civic Center, particularly during school pick-up and drop-off hours, while providing the best possible experience for visitors.
The City Council approved the circulation and parking changes in May 2025 after several months of discussion, informed by a community survey completed by over 500 residents. The survey identified the expansion of short-term parking as a top need, with roughly half of respondents reporting parking in the Civic Center to be either “somewhat” or “very” difficult and over 80% of respondents reporting that they typically stay less than 2 hours.
