Prepare for power outages

Power outages can happen anytime. They often happen during storms. They can also happen during extreme fire danger conditions.

Need to know

How to report issues during a power outage:

  • If you smell natural gas or suspect an emergency, leave the area and call 9-1-1.

  • If you see downed power lines, stay away. Don’t exit your car or home. Call 9-1-1. Then call PG&E at 1-877-660-6789.

Medical and accessibility support from PG&E

If you rely on power for medical, health, or safety needs, it is important to register with PG&E:

Before you start

Power outages can last for minutes or several days, depending on the severity of the issue. In a large-scale emergency, you may need to live without power for over a week.

Steps

  1. Sign up for PG&E outage alerts.

  2. Keep flashlights, headlamps, and extra batteries in a place you can find if it’s dark.

  3. Make a plan for medicine that needs to be kept cold and medical equipment that requires power.

  4. Stock up on food, water, necessary medications, pet needs, and other essential supplies in case of road closures or multi-day power outages. Learn how to create a home disaster kit.

What’s next

If you experience a power outage:

  • Unplug or turn off all electrical appliances to avoid overloading circuits and to prevent fire hazards when power is restored.

  • Leave a single lamp on to alert you when power returns.

  • Keep your fridge and freezer closed to avoid spoilage.

  • Turn your appliances back on one at a time.

Check the status of a power outage.
