East Bay Community Energy

Piedmont’s Participation in East Bay Community Energy (EBCE)

East Bay Community Energy (EBCE) is the new local electricity supplier in Alameda County that gives municipal, commercial, and residential accounts the opportunity to use cleaner, greener energy. EBCE is a Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) program, which is a community-governed program authorized by California law in 2002, that pools the electric load of participating accounts for the purpose of purchasing and developing cleaner power at lower rates. While EBCE will procure electricity from clean, renewable sources such as solar and wind on behalf of Alameda County residents and businesses, PG&E will continue to deliver power, handle customer billing, maintain the power lines, and respond to new service requests and emergencies. In addition EBCE will reinvest earnings back into the community to create local green energy jobs, local programs, and clean power projects.

Enrollment for municipal, commercial, and residential accounts took place in 2018. Enrollment in EBCE was automatic, but if you wish to change your level of service or stay with PG&E, it’s a simple process. Please contact EBCE directly at (833) 699-3223 or visit the East Bay Community Energy web site

EBCE offers three different service plans: Bright Choice, Brilliant 100, and 100% Renewable. Earlier this year, the City Council voted to enroll all residential and municipal accounts into customers in EBCE’s “100% Renewable” service plan. This service plan will be a significant environmental benefit to Piedmont, as the energy will be completely carbon-free and renewable. EBCE estimates that the 100% Renewable plan will cost residents an average of $6 more per month ($0.011 per kilowatt hour) than their current PG&E bill. If the majority of residential accounts remain enrolled with the 100% Renewable Plan, our community will make significant steps towards reaching the greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets of our recently-adopted Climate Action Plan 2.0

Although Piedmont residents on EBCE’s 100% Renewable Plan will get their electricity from wind and solar power, much of other California residents’ electricity still comes from nuclear power, hydropower, and/or natural gas. We encourage residents to consider adding residential solar, where possible, to increase the percentage of total electricity in California’s grid that comes from renewable sources.

Businesses within Piedmont were automatically enrolled to EBCE’s “Bright Choice” service plan, which uses 85% carbon free energy and is 1.5% lower in cost to PG&E’s regular electricity service.

All customers will have the choice to opt up to a cleaner energy service plan, opt down to a cheaper plan, or opt out of the program entirely and remain with PG&E.

For more information about EBCE, to change your service plan, or to opt out and stay with PG&E, please contact EBCE directly at 1-833-699-3223 or visit the East Bay Community Energy web site and click on your preferred action located in the header.
