Probation & Onboarding
Lateral hires complete a two-week in-house training, then move directly to full duty (48/96 schedule).
- 18 month probation
- Rotating assignment between ambulance and engine
- Department-sponsored driver operator 1A & 1B
Qualifications
- Live in California, north of Santa Maria
- Equivalent to graduation from high school
- Valid State of California EMT-Paramedic license
- Passed probation and currently working as a full time firefighter with a paid professional department OR completion of two full seasons (minimum 6 months each) as a paid seasonal firefighter
- California State Fire Marshal Firefighter 1 Certificate
Lateral hires do not need to be on the FCTC eligibility list at the time of hire.
Salary & Benefits
The starting monthly base salary for Firefighter/Paramedic is $10,428 to $11,977.
Salary Incentives
In addition to base pay, here are our incentives:
- Company officer certification: 5%
- First Aid and CPR instructor: 4%
- Uniform allowance: $1,300 per year
- Education reimbursement: $1,200 per year
- Apparatus operator: Engineer minimum when assigned
- Acting officer: Lieutenant minimum when assigned
Retirement plan
- Classic Members: 2% at 50 for employees with reciprocity
- New CalPERS members or enrollment after 01/01/13: 2.7% at 57 Formula
Medical insurance
- 95% of medical premium for employee and family at Kaiser rate (employee pays 5%)

- Safety boots (Station, Structure and Wildland) provided
- Station uniforms provided (T shirts, shorts, sweatshirts, sweatpants) yearly

- 6 shifts per year increasing to 11 shifts per year
